The Route Description

This place is undoubtedly the most scenic hill stations of south India and gorgeous as it could be. Rising at a height of 1600 meters (5200 ft) in Idukki district, Munnar has remained the favourite getaway destination for people right from the British era. The name Munnar comes from "moonth" (three) "aar" (river), as this is the location of confluence of three rivers – Muthirapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala Rivers. Visit here to see a place which is nothing less than a scene out of the fairy tale with unending expanse of tea plantations, pristine valleys and mountains, exotic species of flora and fauna in its wild sanctuaries and forests and aroma of spice scented air. This beautiful destination has all these and more. Without a doubt this place is the perfect spot for honeymooners and for those looking out for a nice weekend getaway.

Start a day with an early morning walk through the lush green valley slopes and the expansive tea gardens. Take a hike through the lands and ensure that you are served with a freshly brewed tea. Enjoy the morning mist and sit back and relax watching the beautiful views with streams nearby. Don’t forget to spot the famous Neelakurinji or Strobilanthus which has special status in the tourism map of this fascinating destination as this flower blooms once in twelve years. Visit the Eravikulam National Park and the Nilgiri Tahr which are the icons of tourism in Munnar. Watch the exotic flora and fauna and wildlife in the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary. Also visit the highest peak in South India, Anamudi. A trekking to this peak will no doubt energize you. When you stand on its top you would feel as if you would touch the clouds. Trek to the gorgeous Devikulam Lake, Lakkam, Attukal, Nyayamakad, Chinnakkal, Kuthumkal, Cheeyapara, Valara and Thoovanam waterfalls and the beautiful spice villages spread everywhere.

If you want to satisfy your shopping appetite then you can collect exotic teas, spices, homemade chocolates, nuts, and coffee. Visit the Tea Museum and the first thing that catches your attention as you enter the museum is the granite sundial made by the Art Industrial School in Tamil Nadu in 1913. The items displayed inside the museum are equally fascinating. It has the original tea roller, ‘Rotorvane,’ which dates to 1905. End your day with a visit to one of the many ayurvedic massage centres and let the masseur melt away your tensions.

Equipments Description

Good walking shoes. Dress warmly, it gets surprisingly chilly during the evenings. Carrying a light raincoat is also a good idea.

There are snakes around the tea plantations but remember that they are more afraid of you that you of them. If you see a snake do not panic and in any unfortunate incident rush to a doctor.
